Even though vehicle safety technology has improved drastically over the past a hundred years, injuries from car accidents are still a very common occurrence. Why is this? Well, cars, motorcycles, and other vehicles are driven by human beings, and as we all know, human beings are not perfect. Even so, there are some tried and tested ways to severely reduce your risk of being in a car accident or becoming injured: there are simple things that almost everyone can do, other than installing some morimoto headlights from the car experts at Apollo Optics. Here are 3 good ways to stay safer on the road.

Proper Seatbelt Wearing

The three-point seatbelt has saved thousands and maybe even millions of lives after its invention and implementation. A modern seatbelt helps to cradle the body and slow down any impact upon the driver or passengers, keeping them safer and more secure inside the vehicle — bouncing around in an accident or flying out of the car are sure ways to be severely injured. Be sure to wear a seatbelt over your shoulder as well: not doing so will make the safety harness less effective.

Full-Face Helmet

Now onto motorcycle, ATV, and side-by-side riders. The risk of harm drastically increases the more of your body you expose outside of a vehicle: a car or truck is much safer during a crash than a motorcycle. There are certain ways to alleviate this problem though. Wearing a helmet while driving a motorcycle, ATV, or side-by-side reduces the chance of sustaining head trauma by a great amount. The majority of motorcycle fatalities are from head trauma, unfortunately. Even though some states don’t require helmet laws, it’s a bad idea not to wear one, the more coverage, the better.

Phone On “Do Not Disturb”

A more modern problem, cell phones have been making up a large portion of car accident causes. Some argue that using a cell phone while driving impairs your reaction time capabilities similar to drunk driving — that is why some states have outlawed using your cell phone while being in motion. It might feel like you need to answer a call or text right away, but it’s important to remember that you’re moving a thousand-pound vehicle at high speeds. Activating your phone’s “do not disturb” option is a great way to silence your cell phone without actually silencing it. No text is worth risking your safety and the safety of others.
